In order to perfect our timing and our techniques, Meibukan Goju Ryu have developed training drills that are based heavily on kata. This begins with the eight Hookyu (Fukyu) Kata and then progresses into Renzoku Kumite (see below) and then once a reasonable level of proficiency has been achieved the practitioner can move on to Kakhomi Kumite.
Basically what this means is that the practitioner will practice on his or her own, within the group until everyone has a basic competence level as well as a basic understanding of what the combination of techniques is all about. Once they reach this level they then get to practice with a partner in two man sets. Once they have acheived the required level of proficiency, they can move on to Kakhomi Kumite in basic five man sets.
These drills teach the practitioner how to react and to move against more than one attacker and also how to move against a wide variety of people of different sizes, ability etc.
